CHECK THIS FIRST: If the batteries are greater than 80%, turn off the solar panel DC disconnect. It’s the red knob on the side of the inverter.

If the batteries are less than 50%, keep the panels on and let it charge while you close everything else up.

This is because we need the batteries in a 50% ~ 80% state of charge for storage over the winter. If the batteries are outside of this window, they might be damaged in the cold!

Beds & Sofas

  1. Remove all of the bedding from each bed in the main cabin, and place them in the large plastic crates. We typically just leave the sleeping cabin as-is.
  2. Place all of the blankets and pillows in the large plastic crates.
  3. Prop the mattresses against the wall (to discourage mice from running on the surface)
  4. Roll up the rugs in the living rooms and place in the the large bags (they should be in the crates in the crawl space, above the backdoor to the master bedroom)
  5. Place all of the sofa cushions and pillows in large bags.
  6. Cover the TV and electronics with a tarp or plastic to protect from dust
  7. Remove any debris from the fireplaces.
  8. Close everything up and pray the mice don’t get into anything

Bathrooms & Kitchen

  1. Place all of the towels, facecloths, dishtowels, oven mitts, and really anything fabric in crates
  2. Put all of the toilet paper and paper towel in crates
  3. Dispose of anything you think will freeze
  4. Close everything up and pray the mice don’t get into anything
  5. Turn off the fridges and prop the doors open with pieces of wood (usually in the cupboards above the fridges) so the fridges don’t start to smell in the winter
  6. Remove the top of the Berkey (with the filters), and dump any existing water and place the metal container upside down in the sink (so the filters and drain and eventually dry). Goal is to ensure it doesn’t freeze, as I think the filters can crack.
